Bank Holiday Settlement Update

ARE YOU ONE OF THE 800 STAFF WHO WORK BANK HOLIDAYS AS PART OF YOUR ROLE AT BRIGHTON & HOVE CITY COUNCIL? DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO A FINANCIAL SETTLEMENT?

For the past seven years, Brighton & Hove Unison has been calling for BHCC to address what we consider to be an equal pay issue, centered around Bank Holiday payments.

This inequity started when the organisation created the Residents Service Guarantee (RSG), one element of which was to pay refuse workers a fixed payment for working on bank holidays. This fixed payment is higher than that paid to hundreds of other workers across the council, many of whom are low paid women working in care.

Unison has called for the employer to pay all bank holiday workers the same, and after many months of negotiations we are pleased to say we have secured an offer which includes six years back pay at 70% of the difference between people's pay and the RSG payment. This is one of the biggest settlements agreed by the council and for the lowest paid workers this will be a significant amount of money. The council has also already budgeted to pay this settlement.

Unison wants the payment in people's pockets before Christmas, but unfortunately the process is currently delayed by work to decide an equitable solution going forward. Our branch is calling for the back pay element to be resolved separately so this money can be released, we will keep you informed on developments on this.
