The city council is trying to sneak through proposals to close or effectively privatise vital services for adults at a “special” Policy and Resources Committee meeting on Wednesday evening. The unions have been given 3 working days’ notice of these proposals.
The services under threat are
Tower House – a day service used by older and disabled people – which the council is seeking to close down, leaving services users effectively to look after themselves.
The Learning Disability Accommodation Service – this service provides residential care and supported living for people with learning disabilities, but apparently this is now regarded as “poor value for money.” The council is proposing that service users just be left to make other arrangements or the council may use “another provider”. They call this “reprovisioning”; we call it privatisation.
These proposals directly affect service users and their families and potentially the jobs of hundreds of Unison members.
