Lobby for a living rent

80% of market rent is not affordable – we need new council housing at a living rent!
This is the message from the Brighton & Hove Living Rent Campaign, which has called a lobby of the council’s housing committee on Wednesday (14th January) at 3.15pm at Hove Town Hall. All are welcome to attend.
Brighton & Hove Council is building new council housing, but it will be offered at a higher rent than existing council tenants pay.
The housing committee in June and September 2014 agreed that the rent for new council homes would be 80% of market rent – over £200pw for a 3-bedroom home and over £150pw for a 1-bedroom flat.
“People on an average wage cannot afford this level of rent. We think the council should set a good example to private landlords, and build new homes at a living rent – no more than a third of average incomes” said a campaign spokesperson.
