Defending services and jobs

The Green administration of Brighton & Hove City Council are faced with making even bigger budget cuts for 2012/13 than expected. Their two-year budget proposals which began this financial year allowed for an expected £14 million cuts in the next financial year.

Revised ConDem government figures indicate that there will now be an extra £11 million to find on top of that.

Brighton & Hove Local Government Unison Branch knows where the attacks are coming from – the central ConDem government. Nevertheless, it will be the council at local level which will have to make the cuts.

Our branch has a long-standing policy of fighting any compulsory redundancies to protect precious services and our members’ jobs. It is that policy which will underpin our forthcoming discussions with the employer.
